Mecca MasjidIf you would like to see one of the oldest mosques in Hyderabad, then you should visit Mecca Masjid. Despite one of the oldest mosques its one of the largest mosques in India too. Mecca Masjid is located in the old city of Hyderabad and its very close to Charminar. The distance between Charminar and Mecca Masjid is just 200 meters and one easily located south-west from Charminar.

Mecca Masjid foundation was lead in 1614 by Muhammad Quli Qutub Shah the fifth ruler of Qutub Shahi dynasty who ruled Golconda region, passed on its successor Sultan Muhammad Qutub Shah. The name Mecca Masjid is derived because the bricks were brought from Mecca city of Saudi Arabia, which is known be the holiest place of Islam religion.

Its said that more than 8,000 employees were working for the construction of this mosque and the three arched facades has been carved from a single piece of granite. The construction of Mecca Masjid was completed after 77 years in 1694 during the reign of Aurangzeb the Great Mughal emperor after conquering Hyderabad.

Mecca Masjid in completely built in granites and it has got beautiful interior. The main hall of Mecca Masjid is 220 feed wide and 180 feet long with a height of 75 feet and can accommodate ten thousand worshipers at a time. The roof of the mosque is supported by 15 arches. The west side of the mosque is blocked by heighten hall to provide Mehrab. Through the main way of Mecca Masjid it has got a man made pond with blue water where you can have quiet and serene moments.

Near the pond there are seating arrangements and its believed that if a visitors sits on it, the person will surely visit Mecca Masjid again. And among its legends its believed that hair of Prophet Muhammad is a room in the courtyard. The timings of visit are 8AM to 12 Noon and 3PM to 8PM on all days.
